About GNOSN

In December 1971, 31 Neuroscientists from New Orleans petitioned the Society for Neuroscience Committee on Chapters to form the GNOSN. In February 1972, GNOSN became one of the 25 chapters of the Society. The first elected officers of the GNOSN were Dr. T.H. Williams (President), Tulane University; Dr. C. Berlin (President-elect), LSU; Dr. V.B. Haarstad (Secretary), Tulane University; and Dr. C.H. Narayanan (Treasurer), LSU. Since its foundation, GNOSN has been one of the most active chapters of the Society for Neuroscience. Many neuroscientists from LSU, Tulane University and UNO have served as officers, and each year we have been organizing local gatherings, invited lecturers from other institutions, and events to promote collegial interaction between faculty, postdoctoral and student members of the New Orleans neuroscience community. In 1971 there were 11 members of the Society for Neuroscience from New Orleans, today there are more than 40 paid GNOSN members and our neuroscience community is growing.

Adamo-Haarstad Award
The Adamo-Haarstad Award was named after two New Orleans neuroscientists who were members of the GNOSN before they passed away in the early 1970s. Dr. Norma Jean Adamo was an associate professor of neuroanatomy in the Dept. of Anatomy at LSU. Dr. Vernon Haarstad was an associate professor in the Dept. of Pharmacology at Tulane University with interests in art and also in pharmacology of witch craft. GNOSN established the Adamo-Haarstad Award in honor of these two former chapter members.
